Having 4 kids, life can be pretty chaotic. Family time is so important to us, and doing something that involves food is even more important to us!
I saw an idea to do Disney movie theme nights and I, for one, love a good theme, so this sounded like the perfect idea for our family!
We decided to keep track of our movies by creating a chart on an app I found called “Spin the Wheel”. We all pitched in adding movies we’d like to see. My husband and I added movies we have never seen with the kids, the old school Disney we grew up on. Whenever we get ready to plan a Disney Movie Family Night we spin the wheel and let fate decide.

We are always adding to it as we think of different or new movies, but the first one that the universe decided upon was none other than Hercules! My husband and I were excited because neither of us had seen Hercules since we were kids and we LOVE Greek food, so we were eager to plan our dinner menu.
We decided to make gyros for our movie night. They can be made with lamb or chicken, we did a few of each. They were absolutely delicious and the kids loved the movie. They’re not big into musicals so they did a lot of eye rolling every time the songs came on (and wow, I forgot just how long “Go the Distance” is). They did love the movie though, and it was so fun to see it again. I am definitely looking forward to making this a part of our family movie nights.

Hercules Greek Gyros:
For the Chicken
- 3-4 chicken breast
- Olive oil for cooking
- Lemon juice
- Smoked paprika
- Garlic cloves, minced
- Dill
- Cumin
- Rosemary
- Ground turmeric
Coat your pan with the olive oil and bring to a medium heat. Place your chicken on a platter or dish and season each side before placing into the pan. Use only your dry seasonings and minced garlic for now.
Once the pan is hot and the chicken is seasoned, place chicken in the pan. Squeeze lemon juice over the chicken as it cooks. Once the chicken is a nice golden brown, flip each piece and let the other side cook. You can squeeze more lemon juice if you’d like. Once chicken is fully cooked, cut into cubes and set to the side.
For the Lamb
- We used pre-sliced lamb strips
- Olive oil for cooking
- Smoked paprika
- Garlic cloves, minced
- Cumin
- Rosemary
- Lemon Juice
Coat your pan with the olive oil and bring to a medium heat. Once the pan is hot, place lamb in the pan. Season with dry ingredients and minced garlic. Squeeze lemon juice over the lamb as it cooks. Once the lamb is a cooked, flip each piece and let the other side cook. You can squeeze more lemon juice if you’d like. Once lamb is fully cooked, set to the side.
Tip: Lamb is very lean so it can dry out quickly. Do not over cook.
Build the gyro
- Choose either Chicken or Lamb
- Pita Bread
- 1 cup of homemade Tzatziki sauce (recipe below)
- 1 Lemon
- Head of romaine lettuce
- 1 small, red onion
- Sliced tomato
- Feta Cheese
Slightly toast your pitas in left over oil from your meat (or you can use fresh oil). Just enough to slightly crisp the edges, you don’t want to make the bread too hard.
Next, prep your veggies. Wash and then thinly slice your onion, tomato and lettuce.
Start constructing your gyro by spreading homemade tzatziki sauce on pita. Then, place the desired amount of meat on top of each pita. Next, add veggies and top with feta cheese crumbs. Squeeze desired amount of lemon juice over the top, fold and enjoy!
Homemade Tzatziki Sauce:
- 1 cup of plain Greek yogurt
- 3-4 cloves of garlic
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons lemon zest (optional)
- 2 teaspoons dill seasoning
- Finely chopped, peeled cucumber (small or about 1/2 cup)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Peel the cucumber before chopping. Then add all ingredients to the bowl and mix well. Serve immediately or store in the fridge for no more than 2-3 days.
